Boxer Phoenix and her new parents

Phoenix has been adopted! A wonderful family in Eastern Ohio has given Phoenix her forever home! She has a wonderful new Rottweiler brother who loves her to pieces. You can see her smiling in one of her pics! Thank you so much to everyone who sent donations, medicine, prayers, and emails. You all made it possible for this girl to rise from the ashes and become the beautiful Phoenix that she is today!!!!

Phoenix is an 8 month old boxer who is in need of extra help. She was pulled from Franklin County Animal Shelter on August 12th. She has been at the vet office since the day she was pulled until August 17th. The poor girl is very thin and in need of major medical attention. But that did not stop GOBR from seeing that she was a special girl who needed their help. Just take a look at the first picture here and see why medical testing was needed to save this girl.

After many tests and trials, GOBR has a diagnosis. It is "Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency". Phoenix does not produce the enzymes needed to digest fats, carbs, and proteins. What a relief to know that somebody did not starve her on purpose which was everybody first thought.

There is medicine that has to be put on her food. She will need this medicine for the rest of her life. One bottle of this medicine cost $89.00 a month plus she needs prescription brand dog food right now to help build up her body mass. With a vet bill of close to $700.00 already for Phoenix, the GOBR needs help to provide the medical attention needed until Phoenix is adopted by that special person who will understand and can afford to provide proper care of this wonderful boxer.

Just look at the face of this sweet boxer pup and see if your heart does not melt. If you can donate even just $5.00 to help this girl, that would be helping to give her the chance to a brighter future. A special fund has been set up just to care of Phoenix.

PayPal is available thru the website. (see below) and then click on the "Make a Donation" box. This will take you straight to the PayPal account for GO Boxer Rescue.

or please mail a check or money order to

And know that your donation to help Phoenix can be used as a tax deduction as GOBR is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

Also if that special person is out there who would like to adopt Phoenix and they understand that she will need medicine for the rest of her life, is willing and can afford the cost, and would never let her down again, please go to Adoption Application and apply to adopt.

Please make sure to share this info with family, friends, co- workers, and everybody you know. The more folks willing to help donate even a small amount will give Phoenix more time to enjoy life.

If you have any questions, please contact either Robin rstyers@woh.rr.com or Rachel at boxers@ameritech.net

Thank you for taking the time to read this plea for Phoenix the young boxer and send her all your "get well wishes".

Phoenix was spayed yesterday. She has a bigger incision than normal because the vet had a hard time finding her ovaries. Guess they were really up in there. She slept all evening once she got home. She's still taking it easy today. She has gained another pound since last week. All in all she's doing great! Here is a pic of her sitting at my feet as I type this. :)

Look Ma, no ribs! Phoenix's bones are now hidden beneath healthy muscle now! She continues to thrive, loves chewing on her sterilized bone, loves running and playing outside, and loves taking naps on the couch with me. And boy, she loves when it's time to eat, now that food can actually stay with her and give her that satisfied full tummy feeling. Today's pics posted above and below.

When we first picked up Phoenix in Columbus on Aug. 12 she weighed 33 lbs. When we got her to the vet the next day, she weighed 30.5 lbs. Today she weighed........

43 lbs!!!!!!

We can start trying to switch her over to regular food, it will need to be moistened so the powder can be mixed in, but the vet said she is looking great!!!!!!

From GOBR Staff:
Congrats Robin - Your love of Boxers (and animals) is really FullFilling (and filling out a special Boxer).

Phoenix goes for a check up at the vet Friday; hopefully she has gained some weight. She is on ID now, and after seeing the vet, will see if she still needs to remain on it. The powder may cost more than $89.00 a month. She has already gone thru the 4 oz. and it has been a week. So, once she gains enough weight that she doesn't need 3 meals a day, just 2, I think she will use about $110.00 worth of powder a month. I though the powder would last longer, or hoped it would anyway.... Robin

She is doing ok, poop still looks great, she tried to play with a ball today, she's been sleeping mostly but is slowly improving. She doesn't like being left in the room alone as you can tell in the one pic. :) Robin

Phoenix coughed all night and brought up little bits of phlem, so back we go to see if she got kennel cough.... She still has a great appetite and beautiful poop! Robin

llSaturday Aug 18, 2007 - later the same dayll

Back from vet, it's kennel cough, we have antibiotics. She's not coughing as much as she did last night. So hopefully with a couple rounds of antibiotics she and I will sleep better tonight

Well, Phoenix is home with us. After many tests and trials we think we have a diagnosis. It is "Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency" (EPI) She doesn't produce the enzyme's needed to digest fats, carbs and proteins. What this means is she most likely wasn't starved on purpose like we thought, this is what happens when a dog has this condition. There is a powder that you put on the food (a bland diet, prescription for right now) that gives them this missing enzyme. Her poop is so much better now and she has gained 4 lbs. This medicine will have to be given to her for the rest of her life. She has to have 1 1/2 tsp. put on her food, 3 meals a day. The cheapest we could find this powder is $89.00 for an 8 oz. bottle, which will last about a month. So....we want everyone's input on this. Tom and I have purchased the first month's supply, we have discussed this with Rachel and we think we should at least give her a chance to find a forever home, however, is someone going to want to adopt a dog that will cost over $1000.00 a year just for this medicine? GOBR surely can't afford to pay for her medicine once she's adopted. Also, we feel a timeline should be set. If we have her for months trying to find an adopter, how many dogs could we have helped in the meantime. I know this is hard to hear, and it breaks my heart, but it is reality. Her vet bill for the week will be over $700.00 when all is said and done. We are looking at seeing how she is in a month, if anyone will have interest, etc. We would like everyone's opinion, and we will surely weigh everything before making any decisions. So, ideas and thoughts are asked for and appreciated. Took these pics tonight. Thanks. Robin

These pics may be disturbing to some of you. She is the skinniest I've personally ever come across. She has horrible diarrhea, thinner than water, (didn't go in the van though) has a great temperament so far. We will be taking shifts with her so we can let her out often and feed her small meals. I will be working split shifts for the next week to try not to leave her alone too long. And we are keeping her from any play interaction with the others so she doesn't get hurt until she is stronger. please pray that this girl starts getting better......
